The Boat: Chopstix

ChopStix is a hybrid design consisting of a rigid fiberglass hull and a nylon fabric deck. The fiberglass hull is durable and stiff so it can take hits from rocks and logs yet moves very efficiently through the water. The nylon deck dramatically reduces the overall weight of the boat while still keeping all water out and body heat in. Because of the nylon's flexible nature, though, we had to add a support matrix of lightweight plywood bulkheads and cedar deck beams and stringers. The wood is held together with lashings and bamboo chop sticks, and that's how the boat got her name. The overall result is an incredibly comfortable and beautiful boat that weighs roughly 25% less than the lightest production boats on the market.
